We are former professional investors with backgrounds in investment banking, and public and private equity investing. After years of helping IT services companies and managed service providers shape and execute strategy and growth, we grew tired of institutional investing…
…we realized institutional investing had a prescribed “playbook” that was rigid, transactional, focused on financial engineering, and at times, sacrificed long-term value for short-term profits. We also really didn’t enjoy the occasional strong-arm approach toward founders, entrepreneurs, and management teams.
We created Sunset Collaborative to truly partner with IT services businesses, leveraging our knowledge of business building and the IT services space to create value and build strong relationships in local communities.

Private Equity

Watch out for the fine print. Private equity firms might promise big rewards, but they come with big risks too. From a time-consuming deal process to pushing for short-term gains, there’s a lot to consider. Don’t get blindsided by slick marketing pitches – their interests come first, because they legally have to (they have their own investors they answer to). Trust us… we’ve been on their side of the fence.

Business Brokers

Broker fees can be as high as 20% of the total transaction value, paid by you as the seller – that’s taking as much as 1/5 of the value of your hard work, without necessarily delivering the value to you in return. Some brokers can be a real asset, connecting you with buyers and managing the administration of the sale process…others not so much. It’s not uncommon for some brokers to be brokers as a “side hustle” and quite frequent for them to be “industry generalists”, having limited knowledge about IT services or your specific company, which means they won’t be able to maximize your business value. It’s also not uncommon for brokered sales processes to last 12+ months from engagement to sale, or for brokers to give special treatment to their own preferred buyers simply because they want to get the deal done and generate a fee asap. Partnering with a broker is a major commitment and can be a hit-or-miss gamble, and it’s difficult to know without experiencing it firsthand.
